Some physical or psychological conditions are contraindicated for hypnosis. This means that people with these conditions should not be treated by hypnotherapy, or that the therapist needs to avoid or modify some techniques.
Our therapists will need to check your medical history in order to confirm if you have any of these conditions. We may need to contact your GP with your consent.
Physical conditions that may require adaptations to techniques include migraine, epilepsy, some heart conditions, breathing problems (including asthma), recent ECT and diabetes (types 1 and 2).
Some serious psychological conditions are unsuitable for hypnotherapy, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Other psychological conditions such as severe depression are not necessarily contraindicated for hypnotherapy. However, your therapist will need to understand your history and current treatment, and it is standard practice to contact your GP.
